Albert Einstein was on vacation at his home on Long Island during the summer of 1939.  On August 2nd, he typed his famous LETTER TO FDR, informing him of the possibility of the atomic bomb.  Hitler invaded Poland on September 1st, so the seeds of the Manhattan Project were sewn one month before WWII broke out.  Five days later on September 6th, he typed the letter linked below.  It was addressed to Professor Earle, mentions Oswald Veblen, and was about Institute for Advanced Study business.  His comments in the last paragraph may be his first comments on the global state, just three days after England and France declared war on Germany.
